Murrumbidgee is located between the fertile irrigation and river systems of the Riverina and the dryland agricultural area of the Hay plains. The area includes Jerilderie, Coleambally and Darlington Point.

Its major industries are agriculturally based. The area also hosts innovative irrigation-based agriculture and is home to the Murrumbidgee river system.
